J.S. Bach: Flute Concertos

“Marcello Gatti, Michele Barchi and the single strings of Ensemble Aurora are all superb, playing with grace and style. This disc is very warmly recommended.” --Gramophone Magazine, April 2009

“Three pieces: a new concerto, an old friend in a (not very) different guise, and a repertory staple. The 'new concerto' is a reconstruction by Francesco Zimei based on movements from three of Bach's secular cantatas.

In his booklet-note, Zimei sets out the reasoning behind his choice: it reads convincingly and, more important, the result sounds convincing as well.

Orchestral JS Bach The 'old friend', billed as a Triple Concerto, is none other than the Fifth Brandenburg Concerto in an earlier version, BWV1050a. Most of us would be hard pressed to spot the difference – minor variations of figuration, mostly in the harpsichord part, and four bars less in the third movement – with two exceptions: there's no satisfying chord to herald the reprise in that movement, and the famous harpsichord cadenza consists of only 18 bars.

The 'repertory staple' is, of course, the Second Orchestral Suite. Marcello Gatti, Michele Barchi and the single strings of Ensemble Aurora are all superb, playing with grace and style. This disc is very warmly recommended.” --Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010

Concertos Baroques Italiens

'In the hands of Maurice André, the solo trumpet became a vehicle for the musical taste, panache and technical flexibility usually associated with the greatest of classical pianists, violinists, cellists, oboists and flautists.' --Jonathan Freeman-Attwood

Orff: Carmina Burana

Carl Orff's setting of Latin texts (mostly describing debauchery) is a classic and one of the most fun choral works of all time. It's loud and playful, and it's one of Hollywood's favorite pieces of classical music. (You can hear it in such movies as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Glory, and Natural Born Killers.) Antal Dorati and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra get it right on this disc, delivering a polished account with plenty of drama and fine soloists (especially soprano Norma Burrowes).

Truth be told, Eugen Jochum still delivers the most riveting performance of this work available to date, but when the music is this good, owning a few different recordings is recommended. As part of the Penguin Classics line of CDs, liner notes by author John Berendt (Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil) reveal why he loves this work so much; sadly, though, the disc fails to include the choral texts and translations. --J.V.

C.P.E. Bach & A. Marcello: Oboe Concertos

"József Kiss’s playing is sensitive and musical…he is very well accompanied and beautifully recorded. The solo Sonata is [also] worth having on disc…with an enjoyable Marcello coupling this is well worth its modest cost." --Penguin Guide

"...a showcase for Jozsef Kiss. The Sonata is a tour de force, with Kiss's astounding variety of tone, his technical control and his instinctive musical insight." --Classic CD

"enjoyable and excellent value" --Gramophone

"another remarkable bargain from Naxos" --CD Review

Fodor, Schmitt, Wilms: Concertos hollandais pour Piano

Schmitt, Fodor and Wilms were considered as leading figures of Dutch music life during the French occupation and of the two Amsterdam orchestras. This recording offers a vivid account of their piano concertos.

“Using a 'tangent' piano - a short-lived hybrid of harpsichord and piano - for the pieces by Wilms and Schmitt, Arthur Schoonderwoerd plays with just the right amount of expressive freedom throughout. He is admirably supported by the Cristofori Ensemble.” --BBC Music Magazine, September 2004 ****

Brahms: Symphony No. 1, Tragic Overture

Bernard Haitink follows his critically acclaimed recording of Brahms's Second Symphony, released on LSO Live in January 2004, with an extraordinary account of Brahms's Symphony No 1.

'a performance of resplendent virtuosity, in which every movement and every gesture, was part of a gripping journey ... [Bernard Haitink] animated each movement with a fiery energy' -- The Guardian

'This was the LSO surpassing even themselves ... inspired by the man on the podium, Bernard Haitink ... this was an exceptional reinvention of the work' -- The Times

'a revelatory re-interpretation' -- The Observer

'a fine, full-blooded performance ... hard to beat' Mail on Sunday

'polished playing and finely judged phrasing made everything fall into place' -- The Independent

Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos No 2 & 3

"Here, surely, we have the truest successor to the great Russian pianists" --Gramophone

“fresh, urgent, energetic, patina-free performances…it has been a long while since this music sounded quite so coherent, and for all his considerable virtuosity it is here that Berezovsky does Rachmaninov - and us! - a very great service indeed” --International Record Review

Heaven & Hell - Radio City Music Hall Live! (Blu-ray)

Radio City Music Hall Live! Was filmed at the iconic New York venue on 30 March 2007. It was the first US concert by the Dio / Iommi/ Butler/ Appice line-up for over 15 years and formed part of Heaven & Hell s 2007 world tour. It was the success of this tour that led to the continued existence of Heaven & Hell, a new studio album and further live dates, and ongoing plans that were only curtailed by the sad death of Ronnie James Dio. Filmed in high definition but originally released on DVD only by SPV in Europe, the show is now being re-released on both DVD and for the first time on Blu-ray by Eagle Vision with additional bonus material.

This program offers a critical review of the band's Bon Scott years--from his first appearance in the early 1970s to his death in 1980--through rare archival material,

The Rolling Stones - 25x5 The Continuing Adventures of the Rolling Stones (02 DVD)

Documentário:

Released in 1989 by CMV enterprises. Colour and b/w. Hi-fi Stereo. 130 min. PAL.
An exellent documentary of the 'adventures' of the Stones between 1963 and 1989.
Live fragments, interviews and parts of 'Rock and roll circus' and 'Cocksucker blues'.
The live recordings from the 60's are (alas) shortened but in exellent quality.
The oldest live recording is from February 1964: the Stones play 'You better move on'
in the Arthur Haynes show. Also fragments of the Stones in TV shows like Ready steady
go, Ed Sullivan and Hollywood Palace are shown. We see parts of the famous Kurhaus
concert in Holland (August 8, 1964) and a Muddy Waters concert from 1981 where he
was joined by 3 Stones members. One of the highlights of this video is the famous
publicity stunt of the Stones from 1975 when they played live on a open truck in
the streets of New York to announce their US tour. The picture and sound quality is
excellent. Included is the clip 'Rock and a hard place'. A must!
Also for sale on laserdisc.
